Abu Wilyam is just a nickname — I am an American who recently graduated from university, but still a student. Things I like: the Arabic language, music (especially playing music), riding my bike, reading, and movies. I’m interested in politics and engaging in different cultures — and here I mean culture in the wide, anthropological sense.

    greetings,
my name is BilQis and I intend to travel to Syria to learn to speak, read, and understand Arabic, at least. I also aim to contribute to my local community via volunteer work. I have not yet figured out through what organization I will study or stay in Syria. Did you stay in Syria through a school program? I am not in school, I graduated nine years ago with a BA. I want to live with a host family, though, and learn Arabic in a school setting, as this will help me increase my network and knowledge of cultures in Syria. Is it common in Syria for unmarried women to live alone or with an apartment mate? Are there university residence halls or boarding houses for female students who come from afar to study? Are there many people with brown skin? My skin is brown and I just want to figure out how much I will stand out as a foreigner. I am not used to standing out as a foreigner physically as I have only lived and worked in Latin America and the Caribbean where I blend in perfectly. Also, would you mind referring me to a source that provides info on the manner in which women are expected to dress and behave in Syria. I want to merge as smoothly as possible upon my arrival. Do you know much about Aleppo? I am considering teaching english there at a berlitz school and would like to get info on the place. also,, what if anything can you tell me about what a great, bad, and decent salary is in Syria? this will assist me in bargaining with berlitz.
I thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

    Sincerely,

    BilQis Aidara Adjei
